MICROPHYT unveils the first promising results of its SMILE program during the second Scientific Advisory Board meeting held in Paris on December 8th.
The second Scientific Advisory Board meeting of SMILE program was held on the 8th of December 2017 at ICAN Institute’s facilities in Paris, France. The Scientific Advisory Board was composed of academic and industry experts in the field of nutrition and health. Representatives from Maine University, ICAN Institute, Nutrition – Health and Longevity cluster and MICROPHYT have share insights and recommendation on the latest results released. At the mid-term of the development program, first results are promising.
The program aims at developing microalgae-based innovative natural marine ingredients based on recently discovered bioactive compounds, with scientifically demonstrated benefits on weight management and cognitive functions. Through an innovative and patented technology, MICROPHYT sustainably produces and markets unique bioactive compounds extracted from the untapped diversity of microalgae. The objectives of SMILE program are (i) the production and characterization of several batches of SMILE ingredients, (ii) the demonstration of SMILE ingredients safety with required studies by authorities and (iii) the demonstration of SMILE ingredients benefits with pre-clinical and clinical studies.
During the first period of SMILE program, MICROPHYT conducted the following activities. Firstly, MICROPHYT has developed the process and the formulation of SMILE ingredients. MICROPHYT has defined the quantity needed for each batch in order to guarantee the full characterization of SMILE ingredients and the implementation of safety and efficacy studies. As a result, the required number of batches was successfully produced, fully characterized, enabling to launch safety and efficacy studies.
Secondly, samples of each batch of SMILE ingredient were analysed in at least 10 different laboratories which represents around 1500 analysis in total. Data collected show that SMILE ingredient compositions are unique and consistent.
Thirdly, after having selected the most relevant CRO (Contract Research Organization), each SMILE ingredient is currently under evaluation regarding safety tests. Studies were launched during 2017 and will be completed in 2018. MICROPHYT is ensuring the follow-up of all these studies with weekly exchanges with the CRO and consultants. Current results obtained are very encouraging and promising.
After the Second Advisory Board Meeting, Virginie Wasiolek, MICROPHYT’s SMILE project manager declared: “We are delighted that the first period of our development program has delivered significant positive results thanks to the team involvement. First; robust and repeatable ingredient production processes were implemented at large scale. Second, the full characterization of the ingredients have confirmed a unique composition in bioactive compounds. And then, we have managed to successfully implement safety studies package.” In the next months, MICROPHYT will get further results on both safety and efficacy aspects of SMILE ingredients completing the roadmap to commercialization.
MICROPHYT SA is an innovative SME specializing in the production and commercialization of microalgae-based natural active ingredients. With its know-how and experience of more than 10 years in this field, Microphyt draws from the microalgae unique solutions for nutrition & health and cosmetics industries. Microphyt’s technologies, developed internally and patented, allow the controlled production of microalgae biomass and extracts. Microalgae are cultured in 5,000 litre capacity tubular photobioreactors. These systems are particularly suited to the production of delicate and/or slow-growing species in that they preserve their cellular integrity; consequently, they offer access to an immensely diverse range of interesting molecules. Microphyt has filed four patents on microalgae production processes. The company now comprises 15 people.
About the APG Group
The APG Group of Companies is an Italian leader in production of esters, refined natural oils, cosmetics raw material and products, advanced biofuel and microalgae with an international manufacturing presence. The group of companies belonging to the founder, Augusto Parodi, has been structured in business divisions in 2016, creating the APG Group, with the aim of exploiting synergies within the acquired businesses in the oleochemical field and based on the original expertise developed over 70 years of activity of A&A Fratelli Parodi. Currently APG is owning, controlling and/or participating in a group of 11 companies with total revenues of 130 Million Euro with 200 employees globally. APG is organized in 3 main business division:
– Chemical: manufacture and development of a wide range of natural-based oleochemical raw materials for industrial applications
– Advanced Biofuel: production of 3rd generation biodiesel based on recovery and valorisation of recycled vegetable oils and derivatives
– Life Science Division – development and production of natural cosmetic, pharma, food and feed raw-materials from advanced vegetable and microalgae feedstocks.
– Its affiliate ARCHIMEDE RICERCHE SRL is a marine-technology company based in Camporosso (Italy), active since 2008 in microalgae research and production.
